Air Fryer mozzarella sticks on a plate with marinara sauce

This Air Fryer Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks recipe has a delicious double coated thick crust to ensure the cheese does not ooze out while air frying. It's a fool proof recipe that I have tried and tested several times. Made with fresh mozzarella and my low carb breadcrumb recipe, oregano and minced basil.

    Ingredient notes

    Ingredients used for recipe

Mozzarella: have you ever had blue cheese sticks? No, that's why they're called mozzarella sticks. Mozzarella is perfect for Mozzarella Sticks without having them get too melty or not melty at all.

Breadcrumbs: I made this recipe twice, once with pork rind crumbs and another with a new breadcrumb recipe I developed. The trick to ensuring the cheese does not leak through the crust is to double coat the sticks. Coat once, freeze, coat again, freeze for an hour and then air fry. They need a thick coating to stop the melted cheese from leaking through the crust.

Seasonings: oregano is my go to ingredient whenever I make an italian dish. It simply is a must for me to add that slight peppery flavour. Fresh basil adds an extra italian flare that gives these sticks that added sweet and savoury flavour.

    Step by step instructions

    1. Preheat air fryer to 400 F

    2. Cut the mozzarella sticks lengthwise about one inch diameter then freeze for 1 hour

    3. Beat 1 egg and place in a medium size dish, in another dish add the breadcrumbsbeating the egg

    4. Remove mozzarella from freezer and first dip into the egg and then dredge through the breadcrumbs ensuring that all side are crusted, place on a wax or parchment lined dish and freeze for at least 1 hour

    5. Remove from freezer and coat again with the egg and breadcrumbs and place once again in the freezer for at least 1 hourbreading mozzarella sticks

    6. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and place the sticks into the basket, spray them with cooking spray. Air fry for 7-8 minutes or until golden brown. If over cooked the cheese may ooze out of the crust.mozzarella sticks in air fryer basket

    Recipe tips and serving suggestions

Double coating: this is a must for the Air Fryer Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks to ensure the melted mozzarella does not ooze out of the crust in the air fryer. Try to make sure every nook and cranny is crusted to ensure there are no leaky holes where the cheese can ooze out of.

Freezing: freezing the sticks between coatings helps to ensure the sticks don't melt too quickly once they get in touch with the heat in the air fryer. You want the sticks frozen before placing them in the air fryer. Otherwise they will melt through the coating in the air fryer.

Cooking spray: spraying the air fryer basket with cooking spray helps to avoid them from sticking to the basket. Spraying the sticks prior to cooking helps give it that golden crust.

Dipping sauce: mozzarella sticks are often served with a marinara or tomatoe dipping sauce. I personally prefer to dip them into a creamy ranch dressing.

Serving suggestions: serve with a side salad or more appetizers. How about a Keto Chicken Nuggets , Air Fryer Jalapeno Popper or these air fryer zucchini fries?

    Frequently asked Questions

    Are mozzarella sticks keto?

Yes, mozzarella sticks are keto friendly as long as the breadcrumbs used are not too high in carbs. You can use pork rind crumbs to keep the carbs minimal or use my new breadcrumbs recipe that is made with dehydrated cauliflower and almond flour.

Can I fry mozzarella sticks in a frying pan?

Yes, fry in oil in a medium size frying pan for about 1 minute on each side or until golden.

Can I bake mozzarella sticks in the oven?

You can on a tin foil lined baking sheet for 3-5 minutes, flip and then bake for another 3-5 minutes. You may need to use cooking spray on the foil and the sticks to get that golden crust.

Oh yum! These would be fantastic as little appetisers or when I do a grazing board when we have friends come over. You're right about the blue cheese being to gooey and also it's too strong. I can see how the mozzarella would have a better consistency. Love the keto version too!
