Why I love this recipe
- Low Carb & Diabetic-Friendly: Enjoy classic Cuban flavors without the carbs.
- Easy to Make: Just layer, skewer, and serve these Cuban skewers.
- Simple Ingredients: Ham or turkey, Swiss cheese, and pickles.
- Fun Twist: A bread-free Cuban sandwich on a stick.
- Bold Dipping Sauce: Spicy mustard with chili flakes and parsley for extra flavor.
A traditional Cuban sandwich recipe consists of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all layered on Cuban bread, then pressed and toasted to a crispy, golden perfection.
Ingredients needed
Truly only 4 ingredients are needed for this Cuban sandwich skewer recipe.
- Ham or Turkey Slices: Choose ham for a classic Cuban taste, or turkey as a pork-free option.
- Swiss Cheese: Adds a creamy, slightly nutty flavor that pairs well with the meats.
- Pickles: Brings a tangy crunch that’s essential for the Cuban sandwich flavor.
- Mustard: Use as a dipping sauce base for a bit of sharpness.
- Chili Pepper Flakes and Parsley: optional

How to make this ham and cheese skewer recipe?
STEP 1: For a mix of large and small sandwich skewers, cut your Swiss cheese into both 1-inch and ½-inch cubes. Prefer one size over the other? Simply cut all the cubes to match your preferred size.
STEP 2: Next cut your pickles into ½ inch slices. We used dill pickles for this recipe. You can choose other types of pickles include small cocktail pickles for a different look.
STEP 3: Set up your workspace with ham or turkey slices, Swiss cheese cubes, and pickles. To assemble, start by threading a pickle onto the skewer or toothpick, followed by a folded deli slice, and finish with a Swiss cheese cube. This order helps the skewer stand upright on the serving board.
STEP 4: Add mustard to a small serving bowl and sprinkle with chili and dried parsley flakes. Serve and enjoy!

Alternative Dips
- Spicy Mayo: Mix mayonnaise with hot sauce or sriracha for a creamy, spicy dip.
- Garlic Aioli: Combine mayonnaise, garlic powder, and lemon juice for a rich, savory dip.
- Creamy Dill Dip: Blend sour cream with fresh dill, garlic, and a squeeze of lemon for a refreshing option.
Recipe Tips
- Assembly: Fold the deli meat tightly to keep it secure on the skewer, especially for smaller toothpick versions.
- Cheese Firmness: Use slightly firm Swiss cheese to avoid crumbling when cutting or skewering.
- Customize Skewer Sizes: Choose longer skewers for full-sized portions or toothpicks for bite-sized appetizers.
Variations
- Meat Options: Swap ham or turkey with roast beef or chicken slices for different flavors.
- Cheese Swap: Try provolone or gouda instead of Swiss for a unique twist.
- Pickle Alternatives: Use mini dill pickles, sliced pickled jalapeños for spice, or even olives for a briny option.
- Veggie Swap: Use cherry tomatoes, pickled artichokes or olives instead of dill pickles.
What to serve with these skewers?
Serve with a fresh side salad, veggie sticks, or low carb crackers for a complete meal or party platter. They also pair well with a charcuterie board or a spread of nuts, olives, and roasted veggies.
Storage
- Refrigerate: Store leftover skewers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Pre-assemble for Later: If prepping in advance, keep skewers covered in the fridge without the dipping sauce to maintain freshness.
- Avoid Freezing: These skewers don’t freeze well, as the cheese and pickles may lose texture.
