What is keto ginger chicken?
Braised ginger chicken is a method of cooking where you first lightly fry the chicken and then simmer it in a sauce. Braising concentrates and enhances the liquid flavor and tenderizes the meat. It's typically a low-temperature method of cooking in the oven.
Ingredients Used
- Chicken Thighs (bone-in): Chicken thighs provide a juicy and flavorful base for the dish, with the bone-in adding extra richness to the sauce as it cooks.
- Fresh Minced Ginger: Ginger adds a warm and spicy flavor to the dish, complementing the savory elements of the sauce and infusing the chicken with its aromatic essence.
- Dry White Wine: White wine deglazes the pan, lifting any flavorful browned bits stuck to the bottom, and adds a touch of acidity and brightness to the sauce, enhancing its complexity.
- Soy Sauce: Soy sauce is the key seasoning in the sauce, offering a rich umami flavor and salty depth that pairs perfectly with the other ingredients, creating a savory and satisfying dish.
- Sweetener: The sweetener balances the flavors of the sauce, adding a hint of sweetness to counteract the saltiness of the soy sauce and enhance the overall taste profile.
- Toasted Sesame Oil: Toasted sesame oil adds a nutty and aromatic flavor to the dish, finishing it off with a rich and distinctive taste that complements the ginger and garlic perfectly.
- Sesame Seeds: Sesame seeds add a crunchy texture and nutty flavor to the dish, providing a delightful garnish that enhances both the visual appeal and taste of the chicken.
- Sliced Green Onion (optional): Green onion adds a fresh and bright flavor to the dish, serving as a colorful garnish that adds a pop of freshness to each bite.
- Garlic, Onion, Olive Oil and Water
How to prepare ginger chicken thighs?
To prepare ginger keto chicken thighs, start by frying them skin side down in an oven-safe skillet or cast iron skillet. Once they're browned, set them aside.
Next, add ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and white wine to the skillet to build flavor. Let it simmer and then return the chicken to the skillet.
Bake the chicken in the oven until cooked through. Remove the chicken again to thicken the sauce on the stove.
Finally, put the chicken back in the skillet, coat it with the sauce, drizzle with toasted sesame oil and seeds, and garnish with green onions before serving.
Top Tip
Properly preheat your skillet or frying pan before adding the keto chicken thighs. This ensures a good sear on the chicken, helping to lock in moisture and create a flavorful crust. Additionally, be sure not to overcrowd the pan, allowing enough space between the chicken thighs for them to brown evenly.
Recipe Variations
- Protein Variation: Instead of keto chicken thighs, you can use chicken breasts, drumsticks, or even tofu for a vegetarian option. Adjust cooking times accordingly based on the protein you choose.
- Vegetable Additions: Add vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, snap peas, or mushrooms to the dish for extra flavor and nutrients. Simply sauté them along with the aromatics before adding the chicken back to the skillet.
- Spice Level: Adjust the spice level by increasing or decreasing the amount of ginger and garlic according to your preference. You can also add a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat.
- Gluten-Free Option: Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version of the recipe.
- Nutty Crunch: Enhance the dish with additional crunch by adding toasted nuts like cashews or almonds as a garnish before serving.
Storage
To store ginger keto chicken thighs, first allow them to cool to room temperature. Then, transfer the chicken and sauce to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
When reheating, you can gently warm the chicken in the microwave or on the stove until heated through. Avoid reheating too many times to maintain the best quality and flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Only 4g net carbs per chicken thigh
Yes, this can be made ahead of time. I made it around mid-afternoon and let it rest in the oven covered until dinner time.
I reheated them at 350 for 10 minutes. Be careful not to heat it too long as it will become dry. You may want to baste with the sauce a couple of times if you plan to enjoy them much later.
