Steps by step instructions
How to make low carb apple cinnamon donuts?
STEP 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Using a large bowl add the dry ingredients and then whisk until well combined.
STEP 2: Add in the wet ingredients and mix using a rubber spatula until everything is well combined and there is no visible dry ingredients.
- Step 1: Mix dry ingredients.
- Step 2: Add wet ingredients
STEP 3: Peel and grate one apple and then fold it into the donut butter. Mix so that there is apple throughout the donut batter.
STEP 4: Transfer the donut batter into a piping bag or freezer bag with the corner snipped off. Pipe the donut batter into a well-greased donut pan. I used coconut oil to grease the donut pan but you could use melted butter or cooking spray.
Dab the tops of the donuts with a wet finger to flatten out the ridges.
- Step 3: Add the grated apple
- Step 4: Pipe into a donut pan
STEP 5: Bake the donuts in the preheated oven at 350°F for 16-18 minutes. A toothpick inserted in the donut should come out clean.
STEP 6: Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing them to a cooling rack. Remove the donuts gently with a small rubber spatula by sliding down on the edges of the donuts and then sliding around to loosen them up.
STEP 7: Once the donuts have cooled, brush them with melted butter, then add the sweetener and cinnamon to a bowl and roll the donuts in the mixture until fully coated.
Top Tip
Make sure to grease your donut pan really well before adding the batter! If not, the donuts may stick and be hard to remove. You can use cooking spray or a brush with melted butter or oil to coat the entire pan, including the sides and the middle part.
Recipe tips, storage and variations
Recipe Tips:
- Make sure to grate the apple finely, so it blends well with the batter without making the donuts too moist.
- Do not overmix the batter; once the ingredients are combined, stop mixing to avoid tough donuts.
- Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before attempting to remove them, as this helps them hold their shape better.
Storage:
- Store the donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, keep them in the fridge for up to a week.
- To enjoy fresh-tasting no sugar added apple cinnamon donuts, warm them slightly in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before serving.
- You can also freeze the donuts in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or reheat in the oven.
Variations:
- Add a handful of chopped nuts, like walnuts or pecans, to the batter for extra crunch.
- For a fall twist, try adding a pinch of nutmeg or allspice along with the cinnamon to enhance the warm flavors.
- Make your sugar free apple cinnamon donuts dairy-free by using coconut oil instead of butter.
